Viva la Revolución!

Civil unrest seems to occur in a sort of "circle of life". Groups form, then they live temporarily in environments that allow them to feed, grow, and thrive. After that, they are snuffed out by those who are bigger and stronger, only to be reincarnated within the next generation. The cycle goes on and on.

Among those currently most notorious, the US has the Tea Party movement while Egyptians continue in their attempt to oust President Mubarak. European nations have been experiencing an uprising of its students as the funding for higher education decreases. This week I have begun to notice the prevalence of the socialist movement here in Florence.

Socialist riot about 2 minutes from my apartment.

Ricordare la resistenza di ieri. Combatterre il fascismo di oggi.
Remember the resistance of yesterday. Fight the fascism of today.

Che Guevara flag.

Smash Capitalism (hammer and sickle) graffiti on a BANK.
FYI: Graffiti is EVERYWHERE and on EVERYTHING in Florence.
It's art just like everything else here.
Don't get me wrong. I'm all for peaceful protest (and all of this was peaceful) and have been involved in numerous movements at home. Everyone has the right to express their opinion. We're all human beings and we need to realize that, just as our views have originated from past experience, so have theirs. If we ever want our opinions to be heard, we have to first listen to the other side.

One of my favorite things to do is defend the things in which I believe. If you know me at all, you know how headstrong I am. The only thing I ever ask for is respect and I gladly reciprocate it without judgement. Think of how much better off we'd all be if no one judged anyone else!

While some scoffed at the protestors, I welcomed them. I may not agree with what they advocate but they have every right to do so (again, as long as it's peaceful).

The Beatles had it right when they said "Love is all you need,".

Thanks for reading this very inspired blog. I'm surprised it took this many entries for hippie Britt to show up. I will keep you all posted on any future protests.

1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. 2 Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3 So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? -Romans 2:1-3

  1. Great post and I agree. It's good to see people standing up for their beliefs instead of this lazy "whatever" attitude that seems to have taken over our country. Most have no idea what's going on. All anyone keeps saying is how they're pissed that gas prices are going to go up due to the chaos is Egypt. I want to punch those people in the face. I won't because I'm peaceful ... I do think it though. Lots. If they could take a step back and look at the whole picture. Everyone single one of us are connected in some way. Doesn't matter if it's happening across the world ....we are all a part of it.
